Byron (Commodore John)

Original title: Byron (Comodoro John)

British naval commander John Byron called at Madeira from 13 to 19 July 1764 with HMS Dolphin and Tamar on a voyage of exploration towards the South Atlantic and the Strait of Magellan.

He was in Madeira from 13 to 19 July 1764, in command of the British warship Dolphin, which was accompanied by the Tamar, commanded by Captain Mouat. Byron was well received by the governor and merely took on some provisions here. The aim of the expedition was to discover new lands and above all to explore the Atlantic Ocean, in the area between the Cape of Good Hope and the Strait of Magellan.
