Thorn-apple (Datura stramonium), a poisonous plant of the nightshade family growing semi-wild in many parts of Funchal. The entry notes its toxicity, its external use in baths against rheumatic pain and its alkaloid daturine.

A plant of the family Solanaceae, with funnel-shaped blue or white corollas and capsules covered in numerous prickles. It grows semi-wild in many parts of Funchal and is highly poisonous if swallowed in a large dose. Internally, it must be used with great caution; externally it can be used in baths to combat rheumatic pain. The thorn-apple contains an alkaloid called daturine.
