Bruce (James)

James Bruce (1730–1794), the celebrated British traveller, discussed the discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo in his travels to the source of the Nile.

A celebrated English traveller, born in 1730 and died in 1794. He deals with the discovery of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) in the work that was translated into French by J. H. Castera under the following title: Voyage aux sources du Nil en Nubie et en Abyssinie pendant les annés de 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771 et 1772 (London, 1791).
