Bogue (Box boops)

Original title: Boga (Box boops)

The bogue (boga), a common native fish of low value, caught mainly in late spring and early summer as part of the 'ruama' group.

A fish of the family Sparidae, native and very common in the waters of this archipelago. It is caught in large quantities mainly in late spring and early summer, together with the mackerel and the horse mackerel, which reach us in abundance from elsewhere at that season. It is one of the species included in the group that fishermen call ruama (fishermen’s name for small shoaling fish such as mackerel and horse mackerel). Hook tackle is used, but the method that yields the richest catch is the conical, bag-shaped net called the rede da ruama. Its value is low and its taste mediocre.
