This well-known English traveller and orientalist was in Madeira in 1792, and published a description of his visit to the island in the work entitled Voyage to Cochin China. A translation of this description exists, published in nos 290 to 292 and 297 to 298 of the Heraldo da Madeira (‘Madeira Herald’).
