Balseira (vines trained on trees)

Original title: Balseira

The former practice of training vines up trees, usually chestnuts, on Madeira's north coast, abandoned after oidium struck the vineyards.

This was the association of the vine with certain trees, usually chestnuts. The system of supporting the vine on trees or twining it around them is abandoned today, but it existed along the whole north coast before Oidium Tuckery appeared in the island’s vineyards.
