José Maria Baldy (1800–1870), Coimbra professor, field marshal and peer of the realm, was civil governor and military commander of Madeira from 1858 after directing public works on the island.
He was appointed civil governor and military commander of Madeira on 9 March 1858, while he was serving here as director of Public Works, and took office on 26 April following. Despite the short period of his government, he left an honourable record in the senior administration of this district.
He was a doctor and professor of the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), a field marshal and a peer of the realm. He was born in Lisbon on 16 May 1800 and died in Coimbra on 4 September 1870. He was the son of the distinguished musician and composer João José Baldy.
