Avezac
Short entry on the French geographer and historian Pascoal Avezac Macaya (1799–1875), whose work Iles d'Afrique gave a broad survey of the Madeira archipelago. The Elucidário judges it flawed in places but valuable, and notes that a translation appeared in the Diario do Comercio in 1909.
The distinguished geographer and historian Pascoal Avezac Macaya (1799–1875), in his highly reputed work Iles d'Afrique, dealt at some length with the Madeira archipelago, giving a brief description of its discovery, geological structure, waters, climate, vegetation, fauna, inhabitants, industry, commerce, customs, etc. Despite its shortcomings and its sometimes less than reliable judgements about things and facts, it is undoubtedly a very interesting study, and one that cannot be read without considerable profit. P. de Avezac had Gabriel de Gorat and Oscar Marc Carthy as collaborators on his work. A translation of Avezac’s study was published in nineteen issues of the former Diario do Comercio, from January to April 1909.
