Marck Athias, physician and histologist born in 1876 and educated at the Funchal lyceum, later professor at the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine.
He was born on 11 December 1876. He is a doctor of medicine of the Paris Faculty and a physician and surgeon of the Lisbon Medical School, having done his secondary studies at the Funchal lyceum (state secondary school), where he was always an outstanding student. He is first assistant at the Câmara Pestana Bacteriological Institute, professor and librarian at the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine, and secretary of the Portuguese Society of Natural Sciences. He wrote a work entitled Anatomia da celula nervosa (Lisbon, 1905) and has contributed to the bulletin of the Portuguese Society of Natural Sciences, Polytechnia, etc., etc.

Where he attended secondary school.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
