A French astronomical commission visited Funchal in 1753–54 to make observations for hydrographic charts and was received with hostility by the people.
At the end of 1753 or the beginning of 1754 a commission of French astronomers was in Funchal, charged with making observations for the correction of hydrographic charts. The governor treated the astronomers with courtesy, but the people received them aggressively, and force had to be used to restore order.
