- See Academies (Academias). Assistência a Crianças Fracas (Aid for Weak Children). This association was founded in 1908 on the initiative of some ladies of Funchal, and its statutes were approved by royal decree (alvará) of the Civil Governor of the District of 24 October 1908. Its aims are to set up dispensaries supplying milk and medicines to poor and sick children no older than twelve, to board such children when they have no mothers or when their mothers cannot raise them, to promote child hygiene, etc.
In the financial year 1916–1917 this charitable institution spent 1,090,220 réis (the Portuguese money of account before 1911; 1,000 réis = 1 mil-réis, 1,000,000 réis = 1 conto). Its board was striving to create a Jardim da Infância (kindergarten) to take in children left abandoned in the streets or shut up at home while their mothers went about their daily work away from home.

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
