The first people known to have borne this surname in Madeira are Diogo de Arvelos, who settled in Machico around 1490, and Pedro Gonçalves de Arvelos, who around 1569 held the office of judge in Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’). Both were persons of noble rank.
