Areias
The Areias is the sandy central part of Porto Santo island, covered by a thick layer of sand blown from dunes in the north-west. Windbreaks of trees and reeds were planted to stop it spreading, and the area has large vineyards.
This is the name given to the central part of the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), which is covered by a thick layer of sand. The sand came from some small dunes in the north-west of the island, and to stop it advancing, windbreaks of pines, canas de roca and árvores do paraíso were planted. In the locality (sítio) of Areias there are large vineyards.
