Ambrósio (Dom)

Original title: Ambrosio (D.)

D. Ambrósio, titular bishop of Rocina, was sent by Archbishop D. Martinho de Portugal to perform episcopal functions in Madeira in 1538–39.

Dom Martinho de Portugal, the first and only Archbishop of Funchal, never came to his diocese, but he sent to this island the titular bishop of Rocina, Dom Ambrósio, to perform here the functions proper to the episcopal ministry. Dom Ambrósio stayed in Madeira for about a year, from 1538 to 1539, and when his ministry was over he returned to the Kingdom (reino, i.e. mainland Portugal). Discipline and the observance of canon law had been entrusted to the two visitors Jordão Jorge and Álvaro Dias, who remained on the island after Bishop Dom Ambrósio’s departure.
