Almeida (Boaventura Mendes de)
Civil governor of the Funchal district from 1907, credited with the swift measures that stopped a deadly disease outbreak in Santo António parish that year.
He was appointed civil governor of this district by decree of 13 June 1907 and took up office on 3 August of the same year. In August 1907 a suspicious disease appeared in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António and within a few days killed 14 people, for that was the number struck by it. This disease, which caused extreme alarm among the population of Funchal, did not spread further thanks to the vigorous measures that were adopted. The speed and effectiveness of those measures were due chiefly to Governor Boaventura de Almeida, whose name thus became linked to the eradication of the terrible disease. He died in Lisbon on 11 August 1934.
