Madeiran priest, seminary teacher, preacher and humorous poet (1845–1924), celebrated for his wit.
His name was Carlos Acciaioly Ferraz de Noronha. He was born in the parish of Santana (‘St Anne’) on 15 July 1845 and died in Funchal on 1 February 1924. He served as a parish priest in several parishes of this island and for many years taught at the Diocesan seminary (Seminário), distinguishing himself as a notable preacher. He cultivated prose and poetry with brilliance, especially in the humorous and satirical genre, and his writings were read with the greatest appreciation. He became very well known here and is well remembered by his contemporaries, particularly for his witticisms, in which he achieved real celebrity; even today the stories and anecdotes featuring his phrases, full of the most spontaneous and sparkling wit, are frequently retold.

Where he died.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically.
