The avocado tree (Persea gratissima), a tropical American member of the laurel family, is grown in the lower zone of Madeira. Its large pear-shaped fruits are known locally as 'peras abacates'.

A tree of the laurel family (Lauraceae), cultivated in the lower zone (coastal belt) of Madeira. It is native to tropical America and bears large fruits, obovate or pear-shaped and purplish or green, with a rather pleasant flavour. These fruits are known by the name of ‘peras abacates’.
